Ms. Stimson has a strong criminal defense background, working as a federal public defender and at the Denver trial office of the state public defender. She successfully beat the death penalty in People v. Montour after proving her client was wrongfully convicted of the prior murder. Prosecutors made a plea offer following her opening statement and cross-examination of the first two witnesses.
In 2014, Mrs. Stimson and co-counsel won the largest civil rights jury verdict against the Denver police in a successful § 1983 action involving unlawful entry into a home, false arrest and malicious prosecution. The jury awarded the family, whose rights had been violated by the police, $1.8 million dollars.
She has tried over 50 cases to verdict and handled thousands. She has achieved acquittals from juries on the most serious charges, successfully litigated many constitutional suppression motions and achieved excellent results for clients through negotiation, investigation and sentencing mitigation.
Ms. Stimson serves on the board of the Faculty of Federal Advocates, the Criminal Justice Act Standing Committee, and is a member of the Colorado Women’s Bar Association, the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Coloradans Against the Death Penalty, and the National Trial Lawyers.
